Nose Injury

Nose Bleeds

If you have had a nose bleed which has now stopped, do not:

  • Blow your nose
  • Rub your nose
  • Pick your nose
  • Drink hot drinks or alcohol for 24 hours (hot drinks and alcohol can cause small vessels to widen in your nose and encourage bleeding to start)

If you do, your nose might start bleeding again.

If bleeding starts again:

  • Lean forward and pinch high up on the soft part of the nose with your index finger and thumb.
  • Keep on pressing - a small amount of blood may still drip from your nose - don’t worry.
  • Suck ice towards the back of the mouth.
  • Repeat this for another 15 minutes if it is still bleeding.

If the bleeding has not stopped within one hour or you feel unwell, then return to the Emergency Department.

Broken nose

If you have broken your nose, you may require an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist opinion. Please look at your nose in days’ time when the swelling has gone down.

If your nose is shifted to one side following your injury or you have difficulty breathing through your nose, please telephone the ENT clinic at Bradford Royal Infirmary for an outpatient review appointment on:

Telephone: 01274 364114

Clinic Times: Monday to Friday 9.30-10.30am and Monday/Tuesday/Thursday 2.00pm-3.00pm

Help with pain management

Simple analgesics can be used after injury, most of which can be bought over the counter in shops, supermarkets or pharmacy’s. Examples are:

  • Paracetamol
  • Ibuprofen

You may have been prescribed an alternative pain killer, please refer to specific advice for that tablet if this is the case.
